Heat Energy- Energy associated with the movement of atoms and molecules within a substance
Heat Transfer
Particles- The movement of particles lead to the transfer of heat
Convection- The movement of particles through a substance, transporting their heat energy from hotter areas to cooler areas.
Gasses- A substance in a physical state in which it does not resist change of shape and will expand indefinitely to fill any container
Less Dense
Liquids-A liquid is a nearly incompressible fluid that conforms to the shape of its container but retains a nearly constant volume independent of pressure.
The water particles closed to the heat source begin to heat up and rise because they become less dence when heated.
The cooler particles stay near the bottom of the container holding them and meet the heat source which makes them heat up and rise.
This process of heating liquids (mostly water) is called a convection current and is used commonly in electric kettles and water cylinders.
Conduction - The transfer of heat
through out a solid using the
particles movement and vibrations
to carry the heat energy
Solids - Solids have tightly packed atoms that feed off of each others movements
Heat applied - When heat is placed by or on a solid the atoms closest to the heat start to warm up and move faster. This leads to their movements and vibrations to bump into each other and evenly distribute heat through out the solid.
Radiation- Energy that moves from one place to another in a form that can be described as waves or particles
Electromagnetic wave- waves that are created as a result of vibrations between an electric field and a magnetic field
Absorb- take in or soak up (energy or a liquid or other substance) by chemical or physical action.
Reflect- Reflection of a surface or body, being able to throw back heat, light, or sound, without absorbing it.
Insulation- The act of covering something to stop heat, sound, or electricity from escaping or entering, or the fact that something is covered in this way
Examples-
Walls at home
Sleeping bags
Clothing
Puffer Jackets
Water bottle
