OCTOBER 1536: 30k rebels, led by Robert Aske (Yorkshire lawyer), gathered in York before seizing Pontefract Castle from Lord Darcy (recruiting him in the rebellion, though he later claimed he was forced. They wore badges and held banners (depicting the 5 wounds suffered by Christ). They circulated hand bills and ballots (which were published on Church doors) they also published the ‘24 Articles' (which included demands for the destruction of works by protestant reformers, for Henry to relent his position as Head of the Church and to reinstate smaller religious houses).
The Duke of Norfolk (Thomas Howard) rode north to agree a truce. Henry promised a general pardon & Parliamentary debate of the 24 articles. The rebels dispersed. However, Henry performed a u-turn = 178 executed (inc Aske, Darcy, Bigod & Sir Thomas Percy).
