CITIZENSHIP AND VIRTUAL WORLDS
Life on Social Media
Rise of Facebook (Mark Zuckerberg).
The Golden You:
Perfectionism: perfect waist, perfect face, perfect selfie, etc.
Causes problems for young children who start to get criticized for living a normal life rather than a perfect healthy one.
Eating disorders, depression, self-harm, body image, suicide, etc.
FOMO: Fear Of Missing Out.
"Living an Insta lie": lying on Instagram to appear perfect, it's addictive and can cause depression. People crave attention and have a constant urge to be seen as a cool person. Lack of transparency.
Culture Jamming
Culture jamming is when people mess with or remix ads, logos, or media messages to make fun of them or criticize them—especially to point out problems in consumer culture or big companies.
Example: the campaign "MyNYPD" was a supportive and happy campaign at first but people turned it into a way to raise awareness on police brutality. It was a campaign that backfired.
Fake News and its Impact/ Fake News is Everywhere.
Fake News can spread very easily.
Industrialization: people create fake news to get ad revenue.
Tech companies (Google, Facebook, etc) tried to limit the revenue people get from fake news.
Has a huge impact on political and civil life.
