The Allies Meet and Debate
Wilson's Plan for Peace
January 1918 - President Wilson had drawn up a series of peace proposals, known as the Fourteen Points
The first four points included an end to secret treaties, freedom of the seas, free trade, and reduced national armies and navies
Fifth goal was the adjustment of colonial claims with fairness toward colonial peoples
The sixth through thirnteenth points were specific suggestions for changing borders and creating new nations
The guiding idea behind these points was self-determination
Allowing people to decide for themselves under what government they wished to live
The fourteenth point proposed a "general association of nations" that would protect "great and small states alike"
This reflected Wilson's hope for an organization that could peacefully negotiate solutions to world conflicts
Why didn't Russia take part in the Big Four negotiations?
Russia was not represented due to the fact that they were in the middle of a civil war when the negotiations occured
How might self-determination in the Balkans have prevented the outbreak of WWI?
They could have determined what government they wanted to live under, and the Austro-Hungarians would have had to leave since the Austro-Hungarian rule was not the government they wanted to live under
The Versailles Treaty
How did the different goals of the negotiators affect the treaty?
Treaty of Versailles (signed between Allied Power and Germany) Adopted Wilsonn's 14th point League Nations (goal to keep peace between nations).
Treaty punished Germany (lost substantial territory, restricted military operations, "War Guilt" clause (sole responsibility). As a result had to pay reparations to the Allies. Germany's territories in Africa and the Pacfic declared Mandates (league of nations controlled)
Heated arguement between leaders during the Peace Conference.
The Treaty was biased
(Paris Peace Conference) Britain and France didn't agreeing with Wilsons plan for peace (concerned with national security). Wanted to strip Germany of war making power
