Morquio Syndrome
Where does Morquio Syndrome appear in the body?
This is a disorder that affects the sugar chains you produce and the enzymes that are used.
The enzymes cannot break down the sugar chains so this means that the sugar can build up to really toxic levels.
Morquio syndrome also affects other parts of the body like eyesight, breathing, teeth, and facial features.
This means that the affected person may have shorter stature and weakness of legs.
It affects the bones as the bones are not formed properly and have many abnormalities because of the trouble breaking down sugar chains.
Why is treatment so important?
Without treatment, it can shorten the life expectancy of the patient, more bone deformities, lots of problems with breathing, and difficulty with sight.
If you don’t treat the body of the affected patient, it can cause a lot more long term problems.
A gene mutation (change) happens and it makes it difficult for affected persons to break down sugar chains.
How do you treat Morquio syndrome?
It uses new enzymes that are introduced back into your body and this helps a lot with the symptoms that come with Morquio syndrome.
There is a treatment called enzyme replacement therapy.
This therapy is continued for the rest of the patient’s life.
There are also other treatments including this one. For example, surgery occurs to fuse the bones of the upper neck.
This helps to prevent potential damage to the spinal cord due to fragility of bones with this disorder.
Many others are recommended. Like surgery to fix the patient’s eyes and ears. Mobility aids are also considered.
What is Morquio Syndrome?
This happens when big sugar molecules cannot be broken down due to not enough enzyme activity in the body.
Some symptoms include: coarse facial features, flexible joints, scoliosis, knock knees, cloudy eyes/vision loss, hearing loss/ ear infections, dental problems, and compressed spinal cord.
The symptoms in your body worsen over time and this means it progressive.
Morquio syndrome, also known as mucopolysaccharidosis IV (MPS IV), is a genetic disease where you have problems with bone growth and there are often abnormalities.
When does Morquio syndrome appear in life?
You need to receive two of the same mutated gene from both the parents to get this disorder.
If you get the condition from your parents, they are carriers of the gene but do not have the disorder itself.
It can be passed down from the parents when conception is happening.
Who does Morquio Syndrome affect?
This happens because an unaffected person has two copies of the same genes in their body, one from each of their parents.
Morquio syndrome is an auto recessive condition.
The affected person must receive the mutated gene from both their parents to have this condition.
This is inherited from the patient’s parents. It happens when conception is occurring.
Morquio syndrome can affect anyone since it's a genetic condition.
