Reductionism - Coggle Diagram
Reductionism
Cognitive
MSM - separates memory into 3 separate stores (SR, STM, LTM)
-
Could be an oversimplification as likens humans to computers - therefore ignores factors such as emotions or social context
Provides rehearsal as only way of memorising info - cannot explain how we can remember info that has not been rehearsed
-
-
Use of case studies - more holistic as consider many factors and variables e.g Clive Wearing. Provides a more comprehensive understanding of memory
Biological
-
Explained by individual factors such as neurotransmitters, brain structure, or hormones
-
Does not consider how factors other than biology may contribute to aggression such as learning or thought processes
-
Means it is easier to collect objective research such as brain scans increasing validity and makes explanation more scientific
-
Evaluating studies for reductionism:
Aim - may only be studying certain aspects of a behaviour and ignoring the rest? (consider other theories that are more holisitc / reductionist)
Participants - focused only on a specific group OR ignores effect of age/gender/culture etc.
Method - lab exp vs field etc. lab exp are reductionist as often removes many variables and focuses on only 1 or 2
Conclusions / results - often an oversimplification and ignores certain factors (what theory is this being used to support?)
