Explain
- Large catchment (lots of tributaries) means high peak discharge.
- Lower relief mores longer lag time as less gravity to help speed up flow.
- Soft permeable rock means more infiltration etc which leads to longer lag time.
- Small catchment (few tributaries) means low peak discharge
- Hard impermeable rock means more overland flow which leads to shorter lag time.
Urban:
- Less infiltration, increased overland flow resulting in higher river levels and quick lag time.
- Enters river quickly due to being channelled by drains and sewers, resulting in quicker lag time
- High relief means shorter lag time as gravity makes water run quickly down the hills.
Rural:
- Increased infiltration, percolation, increased throughflow resulting in lower river levels and longer lag time.
- Increased absorption and intercept, and therefore transpiration so lower river levels.
