Factors that affect network performance - by A Noble
Bandwitdth
This is amount of data that can travel through the network per second
Bandwidth varies between networks
It depends on the price paid or location
This is shared by users on the network
Transmission media
Wireless
Wired
Fibre Optic
Fibre optic cables use light and are quicker than copper wires, they are good for long distances but are expensive
Copper
Copper - these wires are cheaper and use electricity but are slower than fibre optic
Latency
Latency is the delay of data on a network it is caused by a few factors
Distance data is travellign especiallyon copper wires or wireless
Other devices interefereing eg microwaves
Microwaves
Radio waves
Wireless devices
Strong electrical devices
Obstacles especially walls for WiFi
Error rate
Error rate is the rate tat data is lost on a network. The is caused for a few reasons
Obstacles
High traffic
Number of users
Slow transmission wires or wireless connection
Interference from other devices
Number of users
More users are SHARING the bandwidth and therefore have access to less data
More users o na network can slow it down
