Paper waste
What are the effects of paper waste?
- According to the African Association of Entrepreneurs Ethiopians tend to spend importing raw paper materials $ 100 million per year and in total recycle only 5% out of the 15 informal and formal paper recycles. This means the remaining 200,000 tonnes of papers and cartons remain as waste, either buried, polluted on the floor, or burned to ashes.
What I Had Witnessed:
- Number of ICS members printing papers that wouldn't be later obtained.
- Technical issues with the printers where more papers would be printed since the ICS members would request once more to print
-
Water waste
What can it affect? Why?
- Agriculture
- The fact that water is scarce and most percent of water in Ethiopia is polluted due to the factories and how useless items are thrown into the water's surface
- Government neglecting care for water supply
- Lack of water management in Ethiopia
What I Had Witnessed in ICS:
- Toilet flushing--->the small butting not pressed
- Water running from the sink
-
What are the effects of paper waste? Why?
- According to the Europa titled, " Light Pollution and Climate Change" Light pollution contains two methods that affect climate change which directly means the destruction of nitrate acids that cleanse the air pollution at night and indirectly wasting resources that cause air pollution. In addition to the indirect method, fossil fuels are used to produce energy hence the unused energy is wasted causing more air pollution.
- Based on the Climatelinks claims that power, transport, industrial, and building sectors equally share 3 percent contributions of climate change in Ethiopia.
- I had witnessed light from unused classes left on.
How?
Design/ construct?: The way I would measure my success is?:
My final product would be a 2-4 min presentation of an analysis and a progression/declining percentage of the light usage used in high school that would be dated on the 22 of April to the ninth graders. This evidence would be sourced from the ICS staff member who works on the ICS light usage that I would document per week. In addition, I would document my progress and evaluate it to help me plan the next steps with assistance from my Individual Society teacher. My first step would be to identify and have a 5 questions interview with the staff members who work with light through emailing Ms.Orit and Ms.Tigist

Action
My first step is to complete a short 2-4 min video that discusses light waste that will be presented on the assembly days where Dr.Pines announces the Earth Day that the ninth grades will be hosting on April 22. In addition, I would be presenting an experiment where ninth graders would paste stickers on the lights of every class during on of their assembly days. This sticker would give a nudge and a reminder for the members of ICS to switch the lights off as their classes end and in the end would lead to a good habit. The experiment would test the number of light waste that had slightly mitigated over weeks (or days) that would be shortly presented on Earth day.

Notes in Service Related Videos
- One story of an affected person or a member of an organization
- The whys (why to participate/contribute to the donation)
- Connection to that person (having an ambition for things, emotions/being human) that makes the viewers feel sympathy
- Finding who is going to help
- Contains numbers (statistics, percentages, graphs)
- Number of growth or decline (over years)
- Montage of the action
- To show the credibility (whether they had properly used the donation)
-
These notes taken from the video references would guide me in creating an emotional connecting video that would grab and would interest the audiences in participating this light reducing project
People Buy Feelings Not Things by Tony Robbins link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1iRUJv6knQk Key Take Away:
- They are six human needs, the following are:
- Need for certainty: avoiding pain or ideally pleasure.
- Uncertainty: The feeling of surprised/unexpected events
- Significance: The feeling pf being significant, important and unique
- The feeling of connection and love
- The needs of the spirit: growth or decline change.
- Contributing after the growth

The two draft stickers above share commonalities with the same text "Click Here" that would be placed on the light switch's off-click. where people would impulsively click at. In addition, the stickers both contain vibrant colors of green and red. According to Hunterlab green may symbolize life and environmentalism and this project works for the environment of ICS. Homes & Gardens claims, "red is thought to be the most eye-catching way to use color in any space, experts agree. ." Once the selected sticker had been finalized, I would contact Mrs.Anna to create a sticker.
