Who can afford these features/weapons?: Only a few animals that can afford the cost --> large weapons require a lot
Examples of weapons: Horns, tusks, antlers, stings
Ex: Antlers in elk
- antler= fastest growing vertebrate bone but much energy needed
- during rut --> alters= most impressive
- biggest elks = dominant
- elks --> aggressive
- not rutting season --> elks calm
Evolutionary explanation of needing exaggerated features:
- reproduction
- biggest weapons --> attract mates
- change of passing genes on future generation
