ISOSPORA BELLI

MORPHOLOGY
• Oocyst - single form
•Elipsoidal shape ( 20-30 μm l × 10-19 μm b)
• It contains 2 sporoblast - immature cyst.
• Mature cyst contains double layer covering, inside
each sporocyst it develops 4 sporozoites (9-14μm l
× 7-12 μm b )
• All these conversions takes place in soil.
• Mature cyst with sporozoites Infective forms for human beings.
HISTORY
• Discovered & described by scientist Virchow -1860
• Properly named by a scientist weyner -1923.
•Found in African and South American countries.
•Habitat -Large & small intestine.
PATHOGENESIS
• Asymptomatic - infect immunocompetent.
Immunocomprised (5 - 6 days)
• Nausea , fever , vomitting , dizziness ,Lymphadenopathy & Hepatosplenomegaly.
LAB DIAGNOSIS
STOOL SAMPLE
•Wet Mount - iodine
• Modified acid fast
staining - visual cyst form.
• Fluorescent staining - Auramine, Rhodamine
dyes.
• Stool concentration method - zince sulphate ( floatation) formalin ether
• Molecular methods - PCR & ELISA
TREATMENT
• Immunocompetant - ORS to stop dehydration.
• Auto Immunocompetant - usage of immunosuppressants will be stopped.
• Co-trimoxazole - Antimicrobial load.
• After ingestion of contaminated food it reaches
intestine and releases sporozoites.
• Sporozoites will start invading Intestinal epithelial
layer.
• Merozoites have
• The transformation of Merozoites or sporozoites
will be carried in intestine.
Asexual cycle - Merogony
cilia motility
• It forms male & female macro (1) and micro(20-25)
gametes.
• Infection starts in small intestine, here it forma the
micro & macrogamete.
• Only one microgamete will fertilize macrogamete.
• The zygote formed will be called as
• Immature oocyst will have 1-2 sporoblast.
Sexual cycle - Gametogony
