What are the stigmas surrounding Mental Health?
An example of stigma surrounding mental health would be individuals struggling with a mental health illness being called as "dangerous", "crazy", "incompetent" etc.
It's also stigma when someone struggling with their mental health is made fun of or mocked for seeking help
Stigma arises from a lack of understanding of mental health struggles and also because some people have negative attitudes or beliefs towards it (prejudice)
The media can play a huge role in reinforcing stigma
The media can portray inaccurate stereotypes about people with a mental illness
It can also sensationalise situations through unwarranted references to mental illness
The media can also use demeaning and hostile language towards those struggling with mental health
The impact of mental health stigma on those being directly stigmatised is that they may feel ashamed or embarrassed of themselves which can severely impact their self-esteem
What can one do to take care of their mental well-being?
Talk to someone you trust can help if you are openly sharing what you are going through with someone you feel comfortable with
Look after your physical health by ensuring that your gaining at least 30 minutes to 1 hour of physical health per day, eating a healthy and balanced diet, and getting sufficient amount of sleep
Make time for your hobbies that make you happy
Seek professional help by connecting with a counsellor, doctor, or therapist to help cope with what you are going through
Why is it important to take care of your mental well-being?
Our mental health also contributes to our decision making process, how we cope with stress, how we relate to others in our lives, and is essential towards living a balanced lifestyle
Being healthy emotionally can promote productivity and effectiveness in activities like work, school or caregiving.
It plays an important role in the health of your relationships and allows for you to adapt to changes and cope with adversity or your ability to cope with difficult situations in life

Approximately about 18% of people ages 18- 54 in a given year, have an anxiety disorder in a given year.
