Basic Hand Tools
Scriber
This is made from high carbon steel
The handle is Knurled for extra grip
The point is ground down to 30 degrees
Engineers Rule
"Zero" starts at the very start
This is made from steel
The length is 300mm = 30cm
Used to mark and measure lengths
Try Square
Made from high carbon steel
Used to check 90 degree angles
Notch allows for extra "burrs" to fit in
The Bench Vice
Made from high carbon steel
Jaws are serrated for grip
We can use "soft-jaws" or "fiber-jaws"; to clamp delicate pieces
Dividers
A dividers is used to mark circles and arces in materials
An adjusting nuts sets the distance between spikes (radius)
The Hand File
A hand file has small serrations on its face to file down material
Two hands are used to operate this file
The tang is inserted into the handle
Different Profiles
Flat file
Warding file
Round file
Half Round file
Three square file
Hacksaw
The hacksaw is a saw used to cut meterials
The blade is fitted under tension
An adjusting nut tightens the blade in the frame
Ball Pein Hammer
A ball pein hammer is used in engineering to shape materials and to hit tools
The pein is a hemi-spherical ball used to indents into the material
Safety in the Engineering Room
Place bag neatly underneath your desk
Help other student if they need help
Follow teachers safety instructions
Wear correct P.P.E (Personal Protective Equipment) for the task that you are doing
No running around the room
Only use equipment after the teachers permission is given
Keep a safe distance away from people using machinery
