Principle of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can converted from one form to another, but the total amount of energy within the system never changes (remains unchanged).
Mechanical Energy = Potential Energy (PE) + Kinetic Energy (KE)
Total Energy in the beginning = Total Energy in the end (KE1 + PE1 = KE2 + PE2)
When friction is present, work done by the frictional force is transferred to thermal energy and probably sound and radiant (light) energy

Large amounts of energy can be released when the nuclei are combined or split apart.
