2.4: Impacts of climate change on human systems
Direct
Heat waves
Period of excessive hot weather abnormal for the location, lasting for several days
People suffer from heat stroke, breathing difficulties
Deplete soil moisture, widespread crop failure, affect food supply
2003 Europe heat wave for 2 weeks, killed 70 000 people
Droughts
Higher temperature, increase evaporation, dry soil and vegetation
In dry climate areas, dry seasons get drier, cause droughts
Shortage of clean water, dehydration and death
Low crop yield, less food supply, malnourished, die from hunger
Region with lack of precipitation for extended period of time, water shortage
Wildfires
Unplanned, uncontrolled fires that burn in natural areas such as forests or grasslands
Dead trees and vegetation increases, easier for wildfires to start, hard to put out
Loss of human lives, suffocation, burns, injuries
Carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, and particulate matter in atmosphere
Cause air pollution, respiratory illness and death in humans
Destroy buildings and properties, homelessness and economic loss
End of 2019 to 2020, Australia experiences wildfires, people died and buildings destroyed, homeless
Floods
Climate change --->global warming thus warmer temperatures ,
theres more precipitation, which would cause more rainfall
warmer temperatures also lead to more snowmelt, leading to a rise in sea level thus higher coastal flood risk
IMPACTS 1: Loss of human lives due to drowning and injuries from coastal floods
IMPACTS 2: Destruction of properties leading to economic losses and homelessness
IMPACTS 3: Waterborne diseases such as cholera becomes prevalent when floodwater enters drinking wells
EXAMPLE: Bangladesh is densely populated ,low lying country, many people living in coastal areas
Vulnerable to coastal flooding brought by sea rise
2020, Bangladesh experienced worst monsoon flooding due to intense rainfall caused by climate change ,and estimated to have
deaths of 260 people
in 1.3 billion homes and
damage to crops
