medicine through time(1900-Present
Day: Modern)
key factors
institutions- government
laissez faire ideas came to an end
links between germs, lifestyle and DNA
government actions made a difference in 1800s and encouraged further action in 1900s
war
new injuries due to new weapons
surgeons were more practiced
during WW2 the public became used to the government helping them keep healthy and fit
science and technology
greater understanding of DNA and lifestyle benefits
research, techniques, communication was aided by technology
industry
large profit was made in the medical industry (drug companies)
government funding enabled new techniques to be developed
ideas about disease
lifestyle- the understanding that lifestyle had a great impact on health was being accepted such as smoking had links to high BP and can cause lung cancer or heart disease
diagnosing illness- new tech allowed doctors to understand and diagnose more effectively such as X-rays allow doctors to see inside the body and MRIs can help study internal organs
DNA and genetics- not all diseases come from microbes and some can be passed down in the family such as cystic fibrosis
treatment of disease
equipment-new tech made surgeries easier and as well as the medical field such as radiotherapy and chemotherapy to shrink tumours and dialysis to was away blood and the use of keyhole surgeries to reduce scarring during operations
remedies/drugs- scientist face new diseases and they have become immune to some drugs such as MRSA and so new ones need to be made and also lifestyle factors cant be cured by remedies/drugs
prevention of disease
government health campaigns - providing education, promoting healthy lifestyle and diet, giving up smocking and reducing fat intake
quarantine- during Ebola crisis 2014-15 the government warned against travel to west Africa and tracked travellers and quarantined them
public health-laws were put in place such as the health act 2006 which banned smoking at workplaces and the clean air act 1956 and 1963 which reduced air pollution
antibiotics and penicillin
Flemings work 1914 - 1928
development before Fleming- Kochs work in 1870s and 1880s discovered the specific microbes cause diseases
problems before Flemings work- scientist discovered the magic bullet 1930s and the use of salvans 606 and prontosil had side effects
Flemings improvements by 1928- penicillin killed some microbes that couldn't be before and it could be dilute in water to make a cure also he wrote aboutit in a medical journal
limits to Flemings improvements by 1928- he only suggested injecting into the body would help and he tried this himself and he could never make enough
NHS
problems- national health insurance (1911) and also elderly, children and house wives were not covered and people still wanted to just take care of their families at home
improvements- hospital care became free and provided vaccinations also free screening and there was hospital centres for training research
impact- access to healthcare improves and woman's health improved health significantly high tech medical equipment and surgical equipment
limitations- hospitals were not improved immediately and they charged for prescriptions and had very long waiting times
factors- WW2, technology, government
