Solutions and Evaluation of climate change
Renewable energy
Wind, solar, hydroelectric power and geothermal energy reduces the reliance on and usage of fossil fuels.
+Scotland got 97% of its energy from renewable sources in 2021 which was much higher than the rest of the UK.
These greener sources of energy do not produce harmful emissions and therefore reduces the levels of C02 in the atmosphere.
E.g., Iceland 100% Geothermal/Hydro.
Low Emission Zone, Glasgow
As of June 2023, cars will be banned from the city centre unless they meet certain criteria, which will help reduce the amount of fossil fuels, particularly N20.
+This is effective as not only will it help the environment, but it will improve the health, particularly of people who have heart and lung conditions.
Some categories of vehicles are exempt, such as electric cars and motorcycles as they release none or much lower amounts of fossil fuels.
People who are caught driving a car which does not meet the criteria will be charged a £60 fine, reducing to £30 if paid within a certain time period.
-However, some taxi drivers argue that they must buy a new taxi as their current one does not meet the regulations, and this will cost them up to £60,000.
Desalination plant – London
A desalination plant has been built in London to provide additional fresh water in drought.
+This uses 100% renewable energy to operate so is environmentally friendly.
-However, some feel the money should have been invested in reducing water waste.
Reduce reliance on cars
Use public transport, car-pooling or cycling. Schemes such as ‘cycle to work scheme’
have been launched by local councils to encourage people to use greener methods of transport.
-Many people are unwilling to reduce the use of their car because it is more convenient for them to use it,
-and may not be able to car pool if no one is going in the same direction as them so will continue to use their own car.
Hybrid or electric cars are also more widely available.
The council also has NextBikes where locals and tourists can hire a bike from certain locations to cycle around the city instead of taking a car.
+The NextBike scheme has been effective as it each bike saves the equivalent of 41 cars worth of CO2 each year.
Consume Less
Individuals are encouraged to reduce, re-use and recycle. This decreases the amount of methane which is produced from landfill sites going into the Atmosphere
+The carrier bag charge has been extremely successful – retailers report that plastic bag usage has dropped between 80 – 90%,
+has raised thousands of pounds for charities,
+and less are being deposited in landfill reducing methane.
Local authorities in Scotland provide different coloured bins to encourage recycling,
coffee shops are charging 25p for a takeaway cup, and shoppers are now charged 10p for a plastic bag.
