in medieval times, childhood did not exist as a seperate status. once they were able to work, they left "childhood"
children did not lead seperate lives (toys, games, books, music, clithes, school and so on did not exist) child labour was common practice
industrialisation hit, and work moved outside the family home, restrictions on child labour in mines and factories were put in place. children began to be seen as innocent and in need of protection. children would receive severe beatings in the name of dicipline
there is a wide variety of childhoods around the world. this means that the experience of bearing no adult repsonsibilities by western children is not found in al societies

it can be argued that most people would agree that the lives of children have improved. the status of children in the family and society has improved substantially. child laws to prevent harming children eg no serving alcohol to under 18s
