After WWII, Germany was divided into 4 occupation zones controlled by the Allied powers: the US, the USSR, the UK & France. Berlin, located in the Soviet zone, was also divided into 4 sectors. During Kennedy's presidency, as Cold War tensions escalated, ideological differences deepened, leading to the construction of the Berlin Wall in 1961, separating East Germany, under communist control, from West Germany, part of the democratic & capitalist bloc. It became a tangible symbol of the Cold War and the division of Europe into Eastern & Western spheres of influence. It wouldn't be until the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989 (under George Bush's presidency) symbolized the end of the Cold War & the reunification of Germany.
