Synaptic transmission;
Types of neurons;
- Sensory, detect stimuli and generates an electrical impulse to be sent to the CNS.
- Relay, neurons that connect the sensory and motor neurons, found in the CNS.
- Motor, neurons that connect from the CNS to the rest of the body and cause an effect.
Types of neurotransmitters;
- GABA, inhibitory.
- Dopamine, inhibitory and excitatory.
- Serotonin, inhibitory.
Summation, depending on how amount of inhibitory and excitatory, depends on if another action potential will be fire or not.
- More excitatory than inhibitory then an action potential will be fired.
Biological rhythms;
Circadian rhythms - 24 hour internal clock that regulates cycles by responding to light changes in our environment.
- sleep/wake cycle.
- Cave studies.
Infradian rhythms - more than 24 hours eg; every month.
- Menstrual cycle.
- Seasonal affective disorder.
Ultradian cycle - less than 24 hours.
