Influence/ Conformity
conformity results from a motivational conflict (between the fear of being socially rejected and the wish to say what we think is correct) that leads to normative influence, and a cognitive conflict (others create doubts in what we think) which leads to informational influence.

Paying attention to the role played by expectations in supporting social norms has helped differentiate between social norms, conventions, and descriptive norms: an important distinction often overlooked in the social science accounts, but crucial when we need to diagnose the nature of a pattern of behavior in order to intervene on it.

zero sum nature of
Referendum
By making a referendum about a certain group of people, it objectifies that group of individuals and asking if they are worthy or not in order to answer the black-and-white nature of a referendum (e.g. The recent referendum about Indigenous Australians having a voice in parliament)
The zero sum nature of a referendum makes the stakes very high and thus the claims or fears related to the referendum are also very high, thus dividing the nation severely. (e.g. The recent referendum about Indigenous Australians having a voice in parliament)

We should redesign our society to fit into the natural changes in the weather rather than fir our society into the weather to conserve energy.
Limitations to argument
Could be very difficult to implement, would take hundreds of years. Behavioural transformation is almost impossible to change.
