German Reaction to the treaty
German government was shocked at how harsh the punishment was
A. Refused at first, as the terms were too harsh
B. The allies threatened to restart the war if Germany didn't sign

The Allied view
France:
A. The British Prime Minister was not keen to make compromises like the USA did

The peace treaty after the armistice in 1918

But allies didn't want the punishments to be harsh for a number of reasons:
A. Germans felt like they were dragged into the war
B. Allies wanted to give the government a chance to restore stability
C. Allies were scared that Germany would want to take revenge in the long term
D. Allies didn't want to blame the new government for the Kaiser's actions
