In humans cyst is infective form (OOCYST)
LIFE CYCLE
-
SEXUAL CYCLE
4 merozoites forms MICROGAMONT & MACROGAMONT
From 1 MICROGAMONT ---> 12 to 16 microgametes are released
From 1 MACROGAMONT ---> 1 Macrogamete is released
1 microgamete + 1 Macrogamete = zygote ( OOCYST )
-
PATHOGENESIS
IMMUNO -COMPETENT INDIVIDUAL - Short term , self limiting diarrhoea
IMMUNO-COMPROMISED PATIENTS - Prolonged ,life threatening cholera like illness
IMMUNO-DEFICIENT PATIENTS -Symptomatic intestinal and respiratory cryptosporidiasis
Chronic cholecystitis
-
TREATMENT
IMMUNO-COMPETENT HOST : Supportive treatment to prevent dehydration
Patients in taking immunosuppressive drugs -cessation of immunosuppressants
AIDS orr Congenital deficiency -continuous supportive therapy
Anti - microbial agents for cryptosporidiasis -Spiramycin, Azithromycin, Paromycin
