African Americans: A story of immigration
Who are African Americans?
They are black people who came from
Africa
to North America between the 17th and 19th centuries.
They became
slaves
and had to work on the cotton and tobacco plantations of the Southern States.
What happened after the
abolition of slavery
?
Racial segregation
replaced slavey: this means that black people had to live in black communities separated from white people.
For example, black people had to go to different schools, sit in
separate ares
on trains and buses and have separate public places like fountains or toilets.

How did black people fight against racial segregation?
The black community started to react against segregation. In
1955 Rosa Parks
, a civil rights activist, refused to give up her seat on the bus and was arrested.
In response, there was the
Montgomery Bus Boycott
This event marked the beginning of the
Civil Rights Movement
led by
Martin Luther King
Over the next 10 years, blacks took part in many peaceful demonstrations
As a result, in
1964
racial segregation became illegal under the
Civil Rights Act
.
In
1965
all black people got the
right to vote
with the
Voting Rights Act.
What about African Americans
today
?
Today they play an important part in many areas like sport, the arts, politics, in the business and the media.
In

was the first black Presindent of the USA
Do blacks and white people live in peace today in America?
No, they don't.There are still
racial tensions
and blacks are discriminated.
