KNOW THE RESEARCH METHODS – STRENGTHS (ADVANTAGES / POSITIVES )
AND LIMITATIONS (DISADVANTAGES / NEGATIVES)
• VALIDITY & RELIABILITY –
• WHERE POSSIBLE THINK ABOUT HOW THE SAMPLE, THE RESEARCHERS (ARE THEY
TRUSTED PROFESSIONALS / IS THERE ANY POSSIBILITY OF BIAS / CONFLICT OF INTEREST?) AND ETHICS CONTRIBUTE TO THE VALIDITY OF THE RESEARCH*

HOW WILL RESEARCH INTO THE ISSUE AFFECT FUTURE PRACTICE AND
PROVISION?:
• Whose knowledge and understanding do we need to improve – Why? Who?
• How do outcomes for service users need to be improved – How? Why? For who?
• What are the gaps in provision identified by the research – what are they? Who /what
does this affect?
• Does the research identify that a change in policy and practice should take place? –
What? Why?
• REMEMBER TO INCLUDE THE CONSEQUENCES OF THE IMPLICATIONS – who and
how do they effect the individual?
• SECONDARY RESEARCH NEEDED
• RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE PRACTICE AND PROVISION – what are they?
What would be the benefits of the recommendations- for Who? Why? How?
• ANY RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE RESEARCH ABOUT THE ISSUE

HOW TO PLAN RESEARCH: rationale / aims and objectives (achievable) / selecting a
target group /sample / consideration of ethical issues
• ETHICAL ISSUES TO BE CONSIDERED DURING RESEARCH – maintaining
confidentiality / ensuring participants have given their consent / consent from vulnerable
adults / research conduct /data protection (using the research only for the stated purpose)
/ human rights /use and misuse of results/ The Nuremburg Code/avoiding conflicts of
interest /
• RESEARCH METHODS – be able to comment on suitability of methods used – would
another research method/s be better? How could the research be improved?
• RESEARCH SKILLS – time management and organisation / non-judgemental practice/
analysis of data and drawing conclusions /recognising any potential source of bias or error
/ triangulation (use of more than 1 research method ) /using sources of information and
