King Lear - Coggle Diagram
King Lear
Act 3
Scene 1
Kent searches for Lear. Despite everything, he is still loyal to Lear. He must have been really close to Lear for Kent to still try to look for him
However, Lear exiled him for standing up to him. I think that Lear might feel sorry for what he did to him. I am also curious to see if we get any more information about what their relationship was like before?
Scene 6
Everyone who takes shelter seems to be talking like madmen. Lear is severely regretting his decision to give his kingdom to Goneril and Regan.
Edgar sees this, and feels like his suffering is not as bad now that he has seen Lear's
-
Scene 7
Gloucester's eyes are dug out. He is being punished for helping Lear. Everyone is surprised by Regan, Cornwall, and Edmund's cruelty.
Both Lear and Gloucester are regretting trusting their children. They realize that if they had trusted their other children, they would not be in this horrible situation.
Act 5
Scene 1
Goneril and Regan are competing over who can marry Edmund. Edmund is playing into this and has convinced both sisters that he will marry them.
Goneril and Regan are starting to lose power as they divert their attention away from fighting Lear and Cordelia and towards fighting each other. Edmund is trying to benefit from this.
Albany is fully unaware of this. Cordelia wants Edmund to kill him, but Edgar has intercepted her message.
Scene 2
Edgar goes into battle with Lear and Cordelia. Gloucester stays behind and was going to wait to be captured/killed, but Edgar convinces him to go. Offstage, Lear and Cordelia are captured.
Scene 3
The play's finale is very tragic and everyone except for Edgar, Albany, and Kent are dead.
Goneril commits suicide and poisons Regan because of their involvement with Edmund's treason and Edmund is dead.
Cordelia is ordered to be hanged by Goneril, Regan, and Edmund before they die. Albany attempts to send a messenger before she dies, but fails
-
Edmund dies in a fight with Edgar. Albany tries to stop Edgar from killing him, but is too late. Edmund's treason is revealed.
Kent predicts that he will die sometime in the near future. The other two survivors, Edgar and Albany will be the next rulers of Lear's kingdom.
Act 4
Scene 2
Albany chooses Lear's side instead of his wife Goneril's. Goneril is upset by this. He might be a good person now that he knows what Goneril has done. I don't think that he will change Goneril's mind or Goneril will change his.
-
Scene 6
Gloucester attempts to kill himself by jumping off a cliff, but Edgar leads him to a small hill instead. Edgar is loyal to his father and wants to keep him safe.
In King Lear, people remain loyal to people they love and are quick to forgive. Kent, Cordelia, and Edgar all could have just abandoned Lear and Gloucester, but they stood with them.
Act 1
Scenes 3-4
Goneril decides to act cold to Lear and his knights. She definitely lied in the first act. She wants to get rid of Lear, and plans to make him leave by acting mean to him.
Scene 2
Edmund is a bastard (an illegitimate child). During the time when this play takes place, society looks down upon bastards. Edmund wants to replace Edgar, his legitimate brother, and get the same privileges and status that legitimate people have.
Scene 1
-
Cordelia is very stubborn and defiant. It was right of her to tell the truth, but why? She could have just as easily told Lear she loved him and became queen. She seems to be brutally honest with Lear, which definitely was not the right choice there.
Act 2
Scene 4
Goneril and Regan both turn Lear out onto the streets and refuse to let him stay with them. They are being cruel to Lear. Lear is now realizing that he shouldn't have trusted them. I think he might have been able to trust Cordelia, and would not be in this situation if he hadn't cast out her.
Scene 3
Because Edmund has framed him, Edgar must disguise himself as "poor Tom". He is very similar to Kent because Kent also has to disguise himself.
Scene 1
Edmund has told everyone lies about Edgar. They all think that Edgar is plotting to kill Gloucester.
