the upper class had a disposable income which they could spend on sports whereas the working class had longer working hours meaning they could not afford to particpate

women had a smaller role to play in sports than men but still had opportunities to play in sport such as bat and ball games as well smock racing
meant that sports were almost exclusively played by men, with the violent nature demonstrating a sense of perceived masculinity

cruel and violent aspects, owing mainly to the harsh living conditions which reflected in popular recreation with violence being a key factor

South Africas invitation to the Games was withdrawn because of threats from other countries to boycott due to the apartheid regime

non-white South Africans were forced to live in separate areas from whites and use different public facilities and contact between the two groups was limited by law
Black Power

African American athletes protested to the world when two Black athletes used the medal ceremony for the 200m sprint to protest about the lack of civil rights in the USA
they were called Smith and Carlos Silver and used black gloves and socks with no shoes to represent black poverty in America
both athletes told to leave the games but they succeeded in putting global spotlight on the plight of black americans
over 2000 Mexicans were killed by the military during a demonstration against the use of public money on the games when there was widespread poverty in the country

terrorists made a political request to release 234 Palestinians that were being imprisoned in Israel
German authorities attempted to rescue the hostages but this failed and all the hostages and five of the terroists were killed, with three other terrosits wounded

controversy in basketball - with one second left on the clock the Soviets called time out and the clock was reset to three seconds so when the Soviets scored the clock restarted and the Soviets won
it was agreed that the additional three seconds should not have been added but the Soviets were allowed to keep their medal
