A Bloody Stalemate
The Conflict Grinds Along
Germany developed a battle strategy known as the Schlieffen Plan. The plan called for attacking and defeating France in the west and then rushing east to fight Russia
German leaders knew they needed to win a quick victory over France
Germany felt they could carry out such a plan because Russia lagged behind the rest of Europe in its railroad system
By early September German forces had swept into France and reached the outskirts of Paris. The Germans would have won if the Allies would have not regrouped and attacked the Germans northeast of Paris.
When reinforcements were needed more than 600 taxicabs rushed soldiers from Paris to the front. After four days of fighting the German generals gave the order to retreat.
The First Battle of Marne was perhaps the single most important event of the war. The defeat of the Germans left the Schlieffen Plan in ruins. In the east Russian forces had already invaded Germany
Realizing that Germany was going to have a long war on two fronts, German high command sent thousands of troops from France to aid its forces in the east.
Why did Germany attack France first?

german chemists also developed poison gas in response scientists in France and Great Britain developed their chemical weapons and worked on ways to protect solders from these weapons.
other weapons include guns that could fire multiple rounds or hat could shoot a great distance.1915 fighter planes were developed. all of the invention's increased the number of casualties at the front.
Trench Warfare
People dug holes for miles, making what we call trenches.
People fought other troops in trenches across land.
Trenches made a horrible living area for troops. Troops slept in mud, became sick, and would die regularly from infection.
Space between opposing Trenches was named "no mans land" This is due of when generals sent troops out of the trenches they would be met with Machine Gun fire.
Western Front was named "terrain of death" where the trenches stretched over 500 miles long.
