glaciation
processes of glacial erosion
plucking
a glacier moves = friction between the glacier and the ground beneath it
friction = ice melts
meltwater refreezes around rocks
when a glacier moves it plucks the frozen water and rocks
it then gets moved away with the glacier
abrasion
glacier moves = rocks scrape the surface underneath the glacier
striations = marks left from a glacier
tells us where a glacier went
landforms of glacial erosion
fjords
drowned steep u-shaped valley
when an ice age ended, the glaciers melted and the sea level rose
glaciated valleys located near the coast were drowned and became fjords
example: killary harbour, mayo/galway
cirques
basin shaped hollow in mountain
formed when snow accumulates in a hollow high up on a mountain
ice plucks rocks from the sides of the mountain as it begins to move, which makes the hollow deeper through abrasion
the ice eventually overflows and it moves downhill
example: devil's punchbowl, kerry
