How should India deal with China and the US?
US
Fortifying its foreign policy values
India's foreign policy tenets = non-alignment + internal balancing → puts nation first (national interests) and defense strategies
will not change its values just to be on US' side i.e. will not provoke China and "align" itself with US
Buck-passing China to US
Wouldn't have any benefit going on an anti-China balancing coalition, seeing Sino-Indian relations are fine as they are;
why would they want to disturb it?
India has no interest in provoking China
, if US wants to provoke it, should do it by themselves
Ensuring diplomatic ties stay strong
knowing US' power as a Western regional hegemon,
for economic and security reasons, a US partnership would be greatly beneficial
proposing something else in return, not balancing against China, to keep US' foreign policy ties with India intact...
shouldn't pressure too much on "transfer of intellectual property," as for US this would seem like India is having their cake and eating it too; nothing in return... can sour relations
saying it will resurrect the 'Quad', signing three 'foundational agreements), facilitate military cooperation with US...,
showing it is willing to have relations with US
China
Keep Sino-Indian relation as it is
India is part of AIIB, Shanghai Cooperation Organization,
economic ties and benefits are strong
, and
security wise,
China won't invade India, so
keeping US' ideals outside of their bilateral relationship
shouldn't drift too much into US relations
as this can show China that India is 'aligning' itself with US
e.g. emerging as a regional security provider and
working with 'like-minded individuals..." wouldn't China fit that category?
and if not, wouldn't India be 'aligning' itself with US ideals?
Reinforce its state of 'non-alignment'
Letting China know that in terms of foreign policy,
India focuses on non-alignment
, to show them that the US and/or Western influence in wishing to have
India against China won't happen
won't pick a side, further won't go against or provoke China
need interoperability to engage in coalition warfare
keep buck-passing to each other:
US wants India to take leadership role against China, India wants transfer of intellectual property as form of payment (high defense tech power); however, after that is done, who is to say India will act? They don't want to provoke china, if US wants to fight China so bad, they should do it themselves..
china-india have been able to keep conflict under a lid
, doesn't escalate into anything serious; but US wants to get them to fight...
India part of Asia Infrastructure Investment Bank, Shanghai Cooperation Organization; trying to engage India
*both are nuclear powers, but no real conflict is heavily seen
non-alignment, buck-passing, internal balancing are THREE main themes
what can US do to have India on anti-China train?
make sure that the two fight?
what can China do to keep India of the anti-China train?
extending economic benefits to India
India is a 'swing' state, it will not align itself with any block permanently; US cannot rely on a state like India to balance against threats in the West
aside from anti-China coalition, India is a key player within Asian IR; part of organizations like ASEAN ARF, a nuclear power, and strong growing economy
