Memory Errors Week 9
-
-
Source Monitoring
-
Errors
Source monitoring errors occur when we attribute the source of a memory to the wrong source
ie. we think we saw a movie in the theatre, but really we saw it at home
Cryptomnesia is the unconscious plagiarism of another's work due to a lack of recognition of the original source
ie. believing a thought to be your own, but it actually came from a book you read, or something a sibling said
-
-
Misinformation effect
-
Post Identification feedback is a form of the misinformation effect, as this information can effect eyewitnesses memory of an event
Feedback improves an eyewitnesses confidence, regardless of the correctness of the identification

Week 12: Problem Solving
A problem is defined as: When there is an obstacle between the present, and the goal, and it isn't immediately obvious how to get around it
Gestalt Approach
Problems are represented in the mind, and in order to solve them, you must restructure them
-
Kohler's Circle problem shows how restructuring can help solve problems. You have to think about the rectangles components differently in order to solve the problem
Insight and analysis
-
-
Insight and analysis have been studied by having people report warm or cold as they feel they are arriving at a solution
Functional fixedness
-
An inability to see things as more than their intended use. Certain problems that require using tools in ways that are unrelated to their main use can be impeded by functional fixedness
Mental Set
A tendency to approach problems in a way that has worked in the past, and ignore new methods that might improve ability
-
-
-
Experts
Good at solving problems in their own fields, but no better than average in others
Pros
-
Focus on structural features of problems, rather than surface details
Spend more time analyzing, less time solving
Cons
Less creative, more rigid thinking
Groups
Problems with groups
Biased sampling occurs in groups, this is the tendency to focus on information that everyone in the group already knows
-
Study
Groups were given information about candidates, in the control condition everyone had all the info and they made the right choice
In the experimental condition, people who weren't given all the information focused on what they all had, and made inaccurate choices because of it
Dissent leads to increased accuracy in problem solving in groups, as it sparks discussion

Week 10: Memory Errors
Lies as misinformation
Participants filed an insurance claim based on the things that were missing, some were told to lie and say that more was gone.
Memory was tested two weeks later, and liars were more likely to incorporate their lies into memories, recalling them as factual and thinking that these items were actually stolen
Depending on the type of lie told, this was done in 2 different ways
If the lies were fabrications, it was a source monitoring error, as they were familiar with the item, but couldn't recall if it was stolen or a lie
Lies based on omission occur because people are truly more likely to forget the item, due to focusing on it for less time
-
Repressed memories
-
The idea that something so traumatic can happen, that it gets buried in your subconscious mind
Scientific consensus
Most people who experience child abuse have a continuous memory of it occurring.
ie. It's not repressed, they are able to remember some or all of it
It IS possible that these memories get buried, and don't get recalled for a long time, but it is also possible to construct completely false events
-
False confessions
-
Research
Participants type either fast or slow, and are told NOT to press the alt key.
False confession was operationalized as whether or not they signed a confession, this was called COMPLIANCE
Internalization was coded as whether or not they accepted responsibility when asked by a confederate
Results
-
When made to type fast, and there is a witness present, 100% sign a confession, but only 65% internalize the blame, and 35% make up details
With no witness, at a slow pace compliance is still 35%
-
At a slow pace with a witness, 8% with confabulate, 89% will comply and 44% internalize the blame
