Age-related macular degeneration (AMD) - common condition that affects the middle part of your vision
-
Wet AMD -Abnormal blood vessels form in the retina.
These can leak blood or fluid
which causes damage to the macula, and rapid loss of vision.
-
-
Effects
AMD affects central vision and peripheral vision is not impacted. Therefore the condition does not lead to total sight loss.
-
Monitoring
-
Fluorescein Dye Angiography- eye drops are given to dilate the pupils. Dye is injected into the body through a vein. Photographs are then taken of the blood vessels in the retina.
Optical coherence tomography scan (OCT)- using light waves, this scan creates images of the different layers of the retina, allowing for damage to be identified and monitored.
Treatments
There is no medical treatment for Dry AMD. Assistive devices and lifestyle adjustments may help support the individual.
