siphnian treasury
erected at Delphi, to hold the offerings of the Siphnians
-
-
siphnian treasury had combo of diff materials, high quality cycladic island (naxian and parian) marble, but walls made of marble from Siphnos itself
odd choice, siphnian marble is low quality, difficult to work, and siphnos is far from delphi and so expensive to import
externally dated because Herodotus tells us siphnians had grown rich thanks to mines on the island, and they build the treasury out of these profits
the siphnians are later ravaged by exiles from Samos in 525BC, so treasury must have been constructed before this date, terminus ante quem
sculptures
the friezes have mythological content such as a battle scene from the Trojan war cycle and a council of the gods and gigantomachy
