Environments in horror games can be almost anything as long as its dark. However I believe that when you make s location familiar and or relatable like a house similar to yours, or a school. mixing locations that you were mostly around in your childhood (when you actually believed in monsters).
fear
phobia
darkness
nyctophobia, the fear of the darkness, is an uncontrollable fear of the darkness and you being in it, typically you feel this way due to the absence of informations from now being able to induce information about your surroundings
dolls
Pediophobia/Automatonophobia is the extreme fear of dolls or any fake humanoid figures. Our brains look at certain things and if they reach a point of looking human but aren't, with irregular features they go into the uncanny valley. forcing our bodys into fight or flight. In this case, complete fear
bigger things
megalophobia is the fear of things being unnaturally bigger than it should be or big things in general. This can be included in a game by mapping the monster you're running from significantly bigger then you, or to have it so then it has a height advantage by forcing you to look up.
sound
stingers
Stingers are loud ques in a game that helps make something scary more effective, when a loud noise that would make you jump normally is combined with something scary to make someone scared it be classified as a stinger
noises from the "thing"
Making it so that the things that's trying to chase or kill you make noise adds to not only the immersion but also makes the sensation more scarier the fact that the louder its getting, the closer it is from killing you

main horror character
Human
Its hugely debated that humans in horror games can be some of the scariest. This is mostly because when you approach someone you wouldn't know if they're friendly or could possibly kill you
Anthropomorphic
Something that is Anthropomorphic is something that has a similar body shape to a human. Again, if you make a monster that is based off of a human it would fit the theme of being in the uncanny valley, making it more scary.
creature
Not every model of a monster will be scary, its more picking out features of biological creatures that come across as being scary to people.
