Exoplanets and Life
-
Life on Mars
A meteorite from Mars was found in Antarctica in 1984. It looked as though there was fossilised life in the Martian meteorite. However this could just be from a chemical reaction
Seasonal variation of methane on Mars, maybe there's bacteria in the Martian surface releasing it into the atmosphere
Because of Mars thin atmosphere, radiation will destroy DNA
Life on Titan
-
-
Can't find any evidence of life, but possible
Exoplanets
-
The first was discovered in 1995, and 5528 have been confirmed as of 9th October 2023
-
Transit method
-
If a planet moves across the face of a star, some of the light is hidden, and so we can detect the slight dip, or multiple dips from planets
Life on Venus
Surface is too hot, however the atom is cooler so maybe life there
-
Life on Europa
Ice is very thick, hard to drill to see oceans
Energy source for Europe would be Jupiter, from its gravity
-
Direct imaging
Planets are a lot fainter than stars so hard to see. Use coronagraph mask, which hides light from the star.
Astrometry
The wobble of the star, if we can see a star wobble then there must be a planet around it
-
Timing (pulsars)
Neutron stars spin at a specific timing, if the spin rate changes slightly it implies there is something interfering
Auroral Activity
New method in 2020 - low frequency radio was detected, possibility from aurora around an Earth sized planet
