Science Term 2 Mindmap
(waves & vibrations)
Waves
Properties of waves:
Anatomy of a Wave
Crest
The highest point of a wave
Trough
The lowest point of a wave.
Wavelength
The distance from one point on a
wave to the same point on the next wave.
Amplitude
The height of a wave crest from its
rest position. Amplitude is also the
depth of a wave trough, as measured from
its rest position
Node
Node is the point in the wave where
the amplitude is at minimum (zero)
Calculation
Period: time ÷ Number of waves
Frequency: Number of Waves ÷ time
Speed: Frequency x Wavelength
Wavelength: Speed ÷ Frequency
Types of waves
Mechanicall wave’s
Mechanical wave’s only travel through matter
Transverse wave’s
A transvese wave causes particles
in matter to move back and
forth at right angles to the
diretion in which the wave travels.
Electromagnetic wave’s
Can travel either through
matter, any medium or empty space.
Electromagnetic spectrum
Example’s of the
wave’s application
Radio wave’s: Television, AM and
FM radio.
Ultraviolet wave’s Killing
bacteria and curing resins.
Infared wave’s: Thermal camera’s, Thermometers
X-rays: a device that is used for
medical purposes.
Order of electromagnetic wave (inccreasingfrequency)
Radio waves, microwaves, infared,
visible light, ultravilet, x-ray, gamma ray
