Classification of neurons (Size, Shape, & Structure)
-
-
-
Sensory (Afferent) Neurons - guides impulses from peripheral receptors to CNS (Unipolar, some Biolpar).
Interneurons (association/internuncial) - Multipolar neurons (lies within CNS), creates links between other neurons, some cells bodies then combine in specialized masses/nuclei.
Motor (Efferent) Neurons - Multipolar neurons (conduct) impulses from CNS to peripheral effectors (muscles and glands).

Autonomic Nervous System
-
-
Maintains homeostasis, responds to emotional stress.
-
controls heart rate, blood pressure, breathing rate, and body temperature.
Controls visceral motor functions - Smooth, Cardiac (muscle & Glands).
-
-
Autonomic Neurotransmitters - create an opposing effect when organs receive innervation from both divisions.
-
-
Meninges
-
Dura Mater - outermost layer, made up of tough, dense connective tissue, very thick.
Arachnoid Mater - Middle layer, in-between the Arachnoid & Pia is the Subarachnoid Space which contains cerebrospinal fluid.
-
Abuse of Drugs
Heroine - inhibitory & Dopamine neurotransmitters, creates feelings of sedation, well-being, and acts as a pain killer.
Ecstasy - Serotonin Neurotransmitters, creates sleepiness, realization, and appeitite.
Marijuana - inhibitory & dopamine Neurotransmitters, causes relaxation, slows down movement, and removes short term memories.
Methamphetamine - Dopamine Neurotransmitters, causes intense pleasure, exhilaration (excitement & happy).
Alcohol - GABA inhibitory, Gultamate, causes memory formation, decision making, and impulse control.
Cocaine - Dopamine Neurotransmitters, causes control of voluntary movements, fidgeting.
LSD - Serotonin, causes hallucinogens, wakefulness, & startle responses.
Disorders/Diseases
-
Autism - Brain disorder, difficult to communicate.
It is hereditary. Causes anxiety, depression, and delay in learning. Treatment Options are medication, coping skills, and specialized therapy.
-
-
-
Multiple Sclerosis - autoimmune disease, damages myelin sheath.
It is hereditary. Symptoms are muscle weakness, constipation, and depression. Treatment Options are Steroids treatments, physical therapy, and medication.
