The concept of a lingua franca refers to a language used as a common means of communication between speakers of different native languages (Jenkins, 2017, p. 1). Kachru was one of the pioneering researchers on English as a lingua franca, publishing an article on the matter as early as 1996 (Nelson, et.al, 2019, p. 755). ELF research was heavily influenced by the World Englishes paradigm, asserting that the expanding circle Englishes are legitimate English varieties, not mere 'interlanguages' deemed deficient or flawed (Jenkins, 2017, p. 7). Studies increasingly focus on shared features among ELF varieties.
