Basil Hallward, a painter, meets the innocent and strikingly beautiful Dorian Gray and paints his portrait. During the painting sessions, Dorian also meets Lord Henry Wotton, who influences him to indulge in hedonistic pleasures. Enthralled by Wotton's ideas, Dorian wishes that his portrait ages instead of him. He gets his wish and while he remains forever young and beautiful, the portrait turns uglier with every sin he commits. Dorian plunges into a life of excess and moral decay, involving in scandalous activities. The portrait, hidden from others, bears the toll of his sins, becoming more grotesque with each passing day. When Dorian accidentally causes the death of an actress, Sibyl Vane, whose he was previously infatuated with, Dorian's moral corruption accelerates. Basil confronts Dorian, wanting to believe there's still goodness in him. Dorian shows Basil his hideous portrait, causing Basil to realize the truth about Dorian's life. In a fit of anger, Dorian kills Basil. He continues his immoral hedonism, ruining several lives. Ultimately, unable to bear the sight of the monstrous portrait that signifies his internal decay, Dorian stabs the painting, causing his own death, while the portrait returns to its original state.
