Components and functions
-
Funnel-shaped structure made of elastic cartilage, thin skin, and some hair.

ympanic Cavity:
Air-filled space within the petrous portion of the temporal bone.
Houses auditory ossicles (malleus, incus, and stapes).
Auditory Ossicles:
Three small bones connected to the tympanic cavity wall by ligaments.
Transmit vibrations from the eardrum to the inner ear.
Oval Window:
Opening connected to the stapes by ligaments.
Transfers vibrations from the ossicles to the fluid within the inner ear.
-
Bony Labyrinth:
Complex structure consisting of chambers and tubes.
Contains the cochlea, vestibule, and three semicircular canals.
Cochlea:
Responsible for hearing function.
Contains hearing receptors stimulated by fluid vibrations.
Vestibule:
Includes the utricle and saccule.
Houses sensory hair cells that aid in equilibrium.
Hair cells signal nerve fibers based on head movements.
Semicircular Canals:
Three canals aiding in dynamic equilibrium.
Ampulla within each canal houses sensory organs (crista ampullaris).
Hair cells within the cupula signal the brain based on head movement
