nervous tissue
neuroglia: nerve glue, binds tissue together and has cells that support and nourish, communicate with neurons but conduct impulses
Nervous tissue: found in the brain spinal cord and nerves
neurons: or nerve cells that has a soma and cellular processes called dendrites and axons
Types of membranes
Mucous: goblet cells secrete mucous onto the free surface of the tissue for lubrication or protection
serous: lines body cavities that do not open to the outside and covers organs
cuntaneous: helps protect the rest of the body tissue and organs
glands
exocrine glands: secrete products into ducts that open to a body surface
Endocrine glands and glands that secrete into body fluids or blood
muscular tissue
smooth tissue: cells lack striations found in the walls of hollow internal organs, digestive tract and blood vessles
cardiac tissue: only in the heart has striated and branching cells each with a single nucleus
Skeletal tissue: makes up muscle that attach to bone cells, long cylindrical, striated have many nuclei
Epithelial Tissue
pseudostratified columnar: protection, secretion, movement of mucus, linings of respitory passages
simple squamous epithelium: filtration, duffusion, osmosis; covers surface; in the air sacs of lungs linings body cavities and covering viscera
stratified squamous: protection, superficial layer of skin, and linings of oral cavity, throat, and canal
simple cuboidal: protection, secretion, absorption, surface of ovaries, lining of kidneys tubules and linings of ducts of certian glands
simple columnar: protection, secretion, absorption, found in linings of uterus stomach and intestines
transitional epithelium; stretchability, protection, inner lining of urinary bladder and linings of ureters and part of urethra
stratified columnar: protection, secretion, part of the male urethra and linings of large ducts of excretory glands
Locations, structures, functions of other groups
fibroblasts: most common fixed cell type; large star shaped cells that secrete fiber
cell shapes: squamous, columnar, cubiodial
mast cells: large fixed cells, located near blood vessels; release heparin and histamine
collage fibers: thick threads of collagen protien, found in long, parallel bundles, high tensile strength to hold structures together
elastic fibers: made of the protein elastin; occurs in thin branching fibers arranged in a network; stretchy and add flexiability to certian types of connective tissue
apical surface: exposed to the outside of internally to have an open space
Basement membrane: anchored to underlying connective tissue
