5) The Activity, Scary Face Mask (Visual Arts)
First, the educator will set up the art table with the materials at the center of the class. Then, she will ask the children to join her at the table. The educator will then explain that they are going to make a scary face mask and can design it however they like. When the children are settled, the educator will choose a place for herself, sit next to the children, start making her own mask, and act as a co-player. When the children are finished with their masks, they can put them on and act out for a while.
7) Adult's Role
In this activity the educator is a co-player
The educator will ask questions like "What are you using for your mouth? Or she can show interest by pointing out children's work, like "I like the way you put the eyes on your mask."
8) Children's Role
Creative and critical thinkers as they design their masks.
Follow the instructions that the ECE gives them
1) Name of the Activity
Scary Collage Mask
6) Strategies
6-1 Verbal
1) Open-ended questions?
What will you use for your monster's eyes?
what special abilities does your monster have?
2) Encouraging language and tone. For example,
I like how you used the yarn to make hair for your mask, or
'look, everyone X has drawn a scar for his mask.'
6-2 Behavioral
1) Acting as a role model
2) Facial Expression and body language: Whenever a child shows their work, the ECE will smile. Head movements like nodding or shaking their head.
9) Connection to the Concept Web
One of the concepts discussed on the web was overcoming the emotion of fear. Many children think that monsters are real and scary. Through out this activity, children can overcome the fear of monsters and understand that monsters are imaginary beings and merely creations of their own minds.
