In 1609 the Ulster Plantation took place.
King James I of England organised the migration of English and Scottish Protestants to take and settle on land taken from the native Irish people in Ulster.
During the Plantation 4 million acres of land was divided up and rented to the English and Scottish settlers

The Ulster land was cheap and promised.
Planters wanted to introduce their culture and customs to 'civilize' Ulster.
The Causes of the Ulster Plantation

1) King James I of England wanted to rule the entire island of Ireland and to stop the rebellions taking place. Ulster was the most rebellious province in the struggle against British Rule.
2) King James I wanted to introduce the Protestant religion and English customs to 'civilize' Ulster
3) The English and Scottish settlers were promised good farmland and a better life in Ulster.

There was fear of attacks and rebellions from the native Irish

The plantation broughT Protestant and Presbyterianism to Ulster and they became the majority religions in the province

The English language was introduced during the Plantation and the Irish language deteriorated

English farming methods were introduced. This meant there were less cattle farming and more crop-growing.
