Some studies have shown that alcohol consumption reduces female fertility, and some prospective cohort studies suggest that there is a dose-response relationship between alcohol and infertility. However, a recent prospective cohort study found no effect on fertility with consumption of less than 14 standard servings of alcohol per week (Mikkelson et al., 2016). However, alcohol is known to be harmful to the foetus, especially during pregnancy when the foetus is most susceptible to teratogens(compounds that are harmful to the foetus and cause malformations), so alcohol is best avoided preconceptionally. Risks of preterm birth increase by 23% in those who consume 3 or more drinks per day (Patra et al.,2011)
