Burning Fossil Fuels: The combustion of fossil fuels (coal, oil, and natural gas) for energy is a major source of carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions. Power plants, industrial facilities, and transportation are significant contributors. CO2 is the primary greenhouse gas responsible for the majority of human-induced warming.
Deforestation: The clearing of forests for agriculture, logging, and urban development reduces the number of trees that can absorb CO2 through photosynthesis. This leads to an increase in atmospheric CO2 concentrations, contributing to global warming.
Industrial Activities: Certain industrial processes release greenhouse gases as byproducts. For example, the production of cement generates CO2 emissions, and some industrial activities release potent fluorinated gases.
Waste Management: Improper waste disposal and management, particularly in landfills, lead to the decomposition of organic waste, producing methane. Waste incineration can also release CO2 and other pollutants.
Land Use Changes: Alterations in land use, such as urbanization and changes in agricultural practices, can affect the balance of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere.
Transportation: The combustion of fossil fuels in vehicles releases CO2 and other pollutants into the air. The transportation sector is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions.
Use of Fluorinated Gases: Certain industrial processes and products use fluorinated gases, such as hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs), perfluorocarbons (PFCs), and sulfur hexafluoride (SF6). While these gases are present in much smaller quantities compared to CO2, they have much higher warming potentials.
Agricultural Practices: Agricultural activities contribute to global warming through the release of methane (CH4) and nitrous oxide (N2O). Livestock digestion and manure produce methane, while nitrogen-based fertilizers contribute to nitrous oxide emissions.
