Responsibility, Eric, Gender, Class - Coggle Diagram
Responsibility
-
-
"Public Men, Mr Birling, have responsibilities as well as privileges."
-
Juxtaposition of "Responsibilities" and "Privileges". The order of the words could be important here.
Injects statement with "Mr Birling" as a call to the Capitalist Class. Also could imply that Mr Birling is a Public Man.
-
-
Gender
"She was a lively good-looking girl - country-bred, I fancy."
Appearance more important than identity, or how good of a worker she was.
"Lively" infantilises Eva.
Interesting Interpretation: Lively is not stereotypical of women at the time (1912) but of the younger generation. MB is a degenerate (not normal sexually).

"Good Sport."
-
-
A good sport is competitive, implying that Eva had protested, yet Eric still "won".
Eric sees love as a game, and reiterates that Eva is Prey, and he is the Predator.
Eric objectifies women, maintaining patriarchy
RING
-
"No, not yet. It's too soon. I must think."
-
Said in Act 3 after Inspector left (symbolic of Interwar period). Shows how interwar period ended the patriarchy.
HOWEVER, the second death (WW2) still occurs, perhaps due to "Not yet" implying that Sheila would accept patriarchy later on.
