Environmental conditions
In order to grow cells in culture they must be supplied with a growth media and the correct environmental conditions, including:
-
-
-
gaseous environment (some microorganisms are anaerobic and will not grow in the presence of oxygen, others will require a good oxygen supply)

Patterns of growth
-
-
Dry biomass a more reliable indicator of growth than fresh biomass- an organism's fresh biomass varies depending on water availability.
For bacteria and yeast cells growth is usually measured by increase in cell number over a period of time.
