3.2 Genetic diversity
Every gene is a section of DNA that results in different characteristics. A trait is the characteristic that results from the protein
-
Trait
The different types of genes re called alleles which lead to different types of traits, such as curly hair, blue eyes, etc.
-
Types of selection
Sexual selection: attraction, females gain a reference for certain male traits at have nothing to do with survival
Artificial selection: humans breed only the animals or plants with the most desirable traits, in order to accentuate the traits through generations of breeding
Natural selection: survival of the fittest, meaning whoever produces more offspring successfully will remain in that ecosystem
Genetic variability:
- Genes of the parents are randomly mixed in the creation of the offspring to create novel combinations of genes in the offspring.
- Mutations: mutations can occur ring cell division and can be used by mutagens
-
How we inherit genes
Each parent has two copies of genes d two different alleles. We randomly inherit one gene, which means new combinations can occur and lead to new traits.
Co-evolution: when two or more species interact with each other, then adaptation in one species may pressure the other to adapt as well.
For evolution to occur, we need:
