In this pivotal essay, Lowe argues for the recognition of different Asian American identities whilst fighting for liberation as a collective. She writes, "I argue for the Asian American necessity--politically, intellectually, and personally--to organize, resist, and theorize as Asian Americans, but at the same time I inscribe this necessity within a discussion of the risks of a cultural politics that relies upon the construction of sameness and the exclusion of difference" (28). Lowe emphasizes the importance of recognizing differences in identity because it resists the dominant logic of viewing Asian Americans as homogenous group (ex. the model minority myth).
