How might I improve the the health and wellbeing of homeless people and their pets?
Identification of a genuine need
how will my MDP make a positive difference?
My proposed MDP aims to promote both charitable donations towards the homeless community and the implementation of more shelter for homeless individuals' dogs. Consequently, this will enhance the quality of life for both the homeless individual and their dog.
homeless living in poor conditions e.g cold/hot concrete
living outside = suffering from weather conditions
many homeless people often have dogs accompanying them, meaning that their pets are also subject to inhumane conditions
lack of donations due to assumptions or increased use of credit cards
positive personal, community, economic or environmental impact?
community: my MDP promotes community engagement and social responsibility while encouraging individuals to contribute to the wellbeing of the homeless
economic: The app's donations may lead to increased patronage for the organisations that support or collaborate with the initiative, such as Foodbank Australia. This could enhance economic activity regarding homeless communities.
environmental: Offering a reusable and versatile solution for homeless individuals to manage and transport their possessions promotes sustainability and waste reduction in multiple ways.
personal: My MDP offers a safe and comfortable environment for homeless peoples dogs, increasing their well-being and companionship needs. Additionally, the QR code facilitates digital donations, allowing homeless individuals to access financial support in an inclusive manner.
Target market
My MDP specifically targets homeless people and their pets
What is innovative about your proposed MDP solution?
My MDP solution is innovative due to its holistic design, which not only addresses the welfare of homeless individuals but also considers the welfare of their dogs. My design also enables a flexible and uncomplicated method of donation while also contributing to the welfare and comfort of a homeless individual's pet.
Exploration of the need
As I was generating concepts for my final MDP, the prevalence of stray canines (approximately 80,000 in Australia alone) was an important source of motivation. This focus then led to the exploration of homeless people AND their dogs.
Through my investigation, I was able to identify a genuine need: an improved alternative for homeless donations and an appropriate shelter for homeless people's pets.
Opportunities & Challenges: With your NEED in mind.
opportunities:
enhanced mobility and storage options for the homeless and their pets
increased donations for the homeless through the use of the QR code
increased overall quality of life and wellbeing for the homeless and their pet
increased community engagement- fostering a connection between the homeless and the community
challenges
:
durability- My MDP must be designed to withstand weather conditions and general wear and tear
environmental sustainability must be taken into account when designing this product
distribution of the product itself
research
122,494 people were estimated to be experiencing homelessness on Census night in 2021. (NSW)
studies relating to the relationship between homeless people and their animal companions
Many rspca shelters for dogs alone are at full capacity. (receiving on average around 200,000 dogs each year.
The dire statistics regarding homelessness in New South Wales have emphasised the pressing need for a comprehensive solution. My MDP solution aims to address these concerns by offering a flexible and portable environment for homeless people's pets, as well as encouraging community donations via a QR code.
Materials, Tools & Techniques research:
materials: durable yet light weight materials e.g recycled plastics or even recycled wood? as well as fabrics to ensure comfort - possibly something waterproof and stain proof such as polyester or nylon?
Tools: QR code generation websites as well as app creators or website makers e.g google sites or weebly
techniques: possibly the use of a laser cutter as well as a sewing machine
